7kW vs 11kW vs 22kW EV Chargers: Which One Do You Need?
7kW, 11kW and 22kW are among the most common numbers you will encounter when shopping for an AC EV charger.
It is easy to assume that 22kW must therefore be the best choice.
Not necessarily.
The right charging power depends on your vehicle, electrical supply and how quickly you actually need to replenish the battery.
What Does kW Mean?
Kilowatts (kW) describe the rate at which a charger can deliver electrical power.
In simple terms, a higher kW rating can potentially deliver more energy over the same period.
But the word potentially matters.
The actual charging rate is constrained by the weakest link between the charging equipment, electrical supply and vehicle.
7kW EV Chargers
A 7kW-class charger is commonly suited to residential charging.
It may be appropriate when:
- You charge primarily overnight
- Your vehicle's AC charging capability is around this level
- Your property has a suitable electrical supply
- Your daily driving requirement can comfortably be replenished overnight
For many drivers, this can provide a practical balance between charging performance and residential infrastructure requirements.
11kW EV Chargers
An 11kW charger can offer additional charging capacity where both the vehicle and property support it.
It may be appropriate when:
- Your vehicle supports 11kW AC charging
- Suitable three-phase electricity is available
- You want to replenish energy more quickly
- More than one driver or demanding usage patterns increase charging requirements
Before purchasing an 11kW charger, confirm that the vehicle can actually accept 11kW AC.
22kW EV Chargers
A 22kW charger represents a higher level of AC charging power.
It can be useful for compatible vehicles and locations where faster turnaround is valuable.
Potential applications include:
- Compatible residential properties
- Workplaces
- Commercial destinations
- Shared parking environments
- Business fleets
However, many EVs cannot accept 22kW through their onboard AC charger.
If the vehicle accepts only 11kW AC, connecting it to a 22kW charger will generally not make it charge at 22kW.
A Simple Example
Imagine a vehicle with a usable battery capacity of approximately 60kWh.
Ignoring charging losses and other variables for illustration: at 7kW, a theoretical full recharge would take considerably longer than at 11kW. At 22kW, it could theoretically be faster again—but only if the vehicle can actually accept 22kW AC.
Real charging times vary and should not be calculated solely by dividing battery capacity by charger power. Charging losses, battery conditions, vehicle limits and charging behaviour all affect the result.
Single Phase vs Three Phase
Electrical supply is one of the most important considerations.
A property's ability to support a particular charger depends on its electrical infrastructure, available capacity and installation design.
Higher-powered AC chargers may require suitable three-phase electricity.
A professional assessment should therefore take place before selecting a charger based solely on power.
Which Charger Is Best for Home?
There is no universal answer.
Consider 7kW when your vehicle and daily driving requirements can comfortably be supported by overnight charging at this level.
Consider 11kW when your vehicle supports the higher rate and suitable electrical infrastructure is available.
Consider 22kW when both your vehicle and property support it and there is a genuine benefit from higher AC charging power.
Don't Pay for Power You Cannot Use
A common purchasing mistake is selecting the highest-powered charger available without checking vehicle capability.
If your vehicle's maximum AC input is lower than the charger's capacity, the additional charger power may provide no charging-speed benefit for that vehicle.
Future vehicle requirements may still influence the decision, but this should be considered alongside installation cost, electrical capacity and expected usage.
The Three Checks Before Buying
Before choosing between 7kW, 11kW and 22kW, confirm:
1. Vehicle — What is the maximum AC charging rate?
2. Property — What electrical capacity and phase configuration are available?
3. Lifestyle — How much energy do you realistically need to replenish each day?
